Morelia is the coolest place you’ve never been, begins my copy of Lonely Planet Mexico. By cool, I think they meant the temperature, because the evenings were frigid. Either that, or this specific Lonely Planet writer hasn’t ventured out much. It is a beautiful town with great architecture and good food, but it takes more than that to win a coolest place award

High up in the mountains east of Morelia, Mexico, is where one of the great mysteries of the natural world takes place.  Every year, hundreds of millions of Monarch butterflies migrate 4,000 km from the North and Eastern United States to a breeding grounds in Mexico.

Galavanting About Guanajuato

While staying in San Miguel, we were repeatedly encouraged to visit nearby Guanajuato.  Plenty of tours were available for about $75 a head, but inevitably organized tours are a compromise between the fattest, laziest, most decrepit, and loudest people in the group.  Since we lack patience for any of those characteristics, we decided to slum it and organize everything ourselves.

Medicos Mexicanos

Core strength is important, and there are many great ways to build it.  Crunches, Pilates, hacking cough marathons…  but after 2 nights in a row of little, if any, sleep due to a deep cough that just wouldn’t quit, I decided to get some outside help

Me:  I’m not sure, maybe one more month. 

“That is fantastic!  Isn’t it great here?”

Me:  Absolutely, we love it!  The weather is amazing, the people are incredibly friendly, and the cost of living is so agreeable.  What more could you ask for?
