For the next 3 months, we are resting our heads in lovely San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Just a few minutes flat walk away from the Jardin, the town square, we’ve found a wonderful home that we are renting for $1000 a month. What do you get for $33 a day?
3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 12 foot ceilings, 2 private terraces, 2 fireplaces, maid service twice a week, a gardener visit once a week, a washer and dryer for laundry, and is fully furnished with all utilities included… a lot more than we need. The location is fantastic, and we are once again living in the lap of luxury.
We’ve rented such a large space partly to make it easy for friends to visit, since we are just 4 hours away from LA or SF or Houston.
On our previous visit we fell in love with Mexico, the natural beauty, the friendly people, the cultural charm… Mexico is incredible.
Over 141 days we explored far and wide, staying a few days in some places and up to 2 months in others, and yet experienced only a fraction of what is possible. Half the size of the Continental US, it is impossible to see it all, although we did our best. From the capital city to the deserts of the central highlands, from one food center of Mexico to the other, from the Pacific Coast to the eastern jungle, we explored a diverse and exciting sample
The sea was tossing and the horizon was blue in every direction. Everybody aboard was sick, slightly green in color and occasionally rushing to the bathroom or the nearest rail. 70 other boats jockeyed for position, their wakes adding to the turmoil. The boat captain started yelling in unintelligible Spanish, pointing aggressively towards us and the side of the boat in turn. Seconds later, we were face to face with a 20 foot long shark
3 times longer than ourselves, they glide gracefully through the water, effortlessly advancing at a speed that was difficult to mimic for long. Curious, several times they swam within an arms reach of us, as if to say hello to the strange creatures that have visited their world
ADO has a night bus from Belize City to Cancun, Mexico, with stops along the way in Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. Unfortunately information on this bus service is limited and (sometimes) contradictory. Even the website that ADO publishes for information is a dead end. (www.adobelize.com)
We asked several tour operators on Caye Caulker and received different information from each on departure times, cost, and duration of the trip. The only thing they agreed on was that they couldn’t sell us tickets
Hopefully this post will help future travelers take advantage of this great trip option, while minimizing hassle and stress.
“Hmm, this is interesting… I don’t understand what happened. Hold on a moment”, says our friendly neighborhood bilingual immigration officer.
About 20 minutes later he returns with a small stack of documents
“Normally”, he begins, “all US passport holders and green card holders are automatically given a 180 day visa when they enter the country. For some reason, you were only granted 30 days. But we can process your extension application here.”
