In an effort to reignite travel spending from its cardmembers, American Express released a slew of new benefits to their Platinum credit card in 2021 — one of which was a $200 yearly credit for prepaid hotels through the Amex Travel portal.

Finding ourselves in Chicago for a weekend gave us the opportunity to put this credit, and a new property, to the test at the Four Seasons. Here’s how it went.

Plans, They Are A Changin’

As the summer of 2021 was wrapping up, more and more countries began opening their borders to international travelers. Having been hopeful of this, I booked us on an extravagant multi-month round-the-world trip for minimal out-of-pocket cost using award miles and points, only to have the trip crumble and slip through my fingers as COVID-19 flareups and the eventual Omicron variant came into play.

We still managed to get out of the country for the winter, but we ended up in an entirely different hemisphere.

Sweet, Sweet, Debt

Debt has been called many interesting things… concrete shoes, shackles for the middle class, the greatest burden… there were many years in my own life where I was terrified of debt.

But when used wisely it can be an incredibly powerful tool. So powerful in fact, it is how I plan to fund much of our cost of living for the next decade.

Late last year, Capital One released the Venture X Rewards Credit Card with a list of benefits that raised eyebrows. With the intention of making a splash in the ultra-premium credit card pool, it did just that by offering a ton of useful and enticing benefits.

The Venture X is one of the best new cards on the market, and is definitely worth a look.
